Counselling

Nurturing the emotional wellbeing of our students remains a key focus of the St Francis Xavier College community. In order to address this, Student Support Services provides a counselling service for students, parents and staff. This complements the College’s commitment to the pastoral and welfare needs of our school community. By providing such a resource we acknowledge the importance of developing the whole person and the unique demands faced by each student and their families.

Aims of the Counselling Service:

To develop:

  • Self esteem
  • Coping strategies
  • Problem solving skills
  • Resilience
  • Fulfilling relationships with families and peers
  • Life goals
  • Effective study skills

Supporting our adolescents with strategies to promote resilience is a major focus of the support service. We also aim to respond to perceived welfare and personal development needs through the curriculum and by running specific group programs.

By promoting help seeking behaviours as a proactive means of meeting life’s challenges, SFX encourages students to utilise our support network. We therefore provide students with access to this service as part of their enrolment at the College. Wherever possible, parental involvement is sought and encouraged with all students. Parents are also encouraged to contact the service with any concerns they may have. Accessing this resource incurs no additional fees and students may be self-referred or parent/teacher referred.

Confidentiality is of primary importance to this role, and an ongoing issue is to strike the appropriate balance between the need to respect client confidentiality and the need to disclose information to ensure satisfactory outcomes for the client. If you have any particular concerns in this regard, your questions are most welcome.

Our College counselling team includes Mr Robert Fleming, Ms. Andree Evans, Mrs Monica Murphy and Ms Sarah Robson.

We also have a Pastoral Assistant, Mrs. Rhonda O'Connor, who supports the work of the Counselling Team. She liaises with our Parishes, supports families in crisis and is involved in the liturgical life of our students.
